Pilates is an exercise philosophy and approach that was developed by German born Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920′s. The physical practice that he developed emerged out of his studies of Yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, zen meditation and other activities. He wanted to devise a way to use exercise to develop the mind and body in a harmonious way.

Pilates is based on working the body in a mindful way using control and precision, using the breath and proper alignment that begins with strengthening the core of the body, the abdominals, lower back, gluteus and pelvic area–which then serves to help the rest of the body.

A typical Pilates class is accessible for most everyone at any level of fitness. If you take a class at a fitness center or a gym you will be guided by your instructor to take it slow in the beginning so that you can first develop that core strength that will be necessary for the more advanced exercises.

More advanced Pilates classes may use machines and equipment designed to intensify the workout using your won body’s weight to create resistance. These classes should be taught by a certified Pilates instructor to ensure the safety of students as they use the equipment.
