Starting college can be very stressful. Even though, it’s exciting and a lot of fun, it’s also a whole new experience. Many new college students respond to the stress of their first year by putting on a bit of extra weight, often called the Freshman Fifteen. What can you do to avoid this? In your first year of college, you will undergo a lot of adjustments – especially if the college you attend is in another state or even another country. You’ll be away from your family, friends and familiar setting. On top of that, you’ll have a lot of new responsibilities and routines to learn. You’ll have to study, learn to get along with your roommate, and keep up with all your classes.
It’s important that you start out with a regular routine that allows you time to relax and rejuvenate. Never skip meals, be sure to get at least half an hour of exercise every day and plenty of good sleep. Set up regular study times so that you won’t be stuck having to pull all-nighters, which are actually very ineffective.
If you don’t drink now, don’t start. That’s a decision you’ll never regret. If you do drink, do so only in moderation. Going to class hung-over is a lousy experience and certainly not the best way to make the most of your educational opportunities. Keep your focus on staying healthy and in good shape throughout your college years by eating well taking good care of yourself. You’ll come out head and shoulders above the crowd in the end.
You may think it’s too hard to stay physically fit in college unless you’re majoring in PE, but that’s really not true. Make smart choices as you go through each day. Choose whole foods over junk food, pure filtered water over soda or alcohol, walking or cycling over driving or riding the bus, and so on. Always make the healthy or active choice, and you will stay naturally healthy and active.
You will probably be needed to take some kind of PE class no matter what your major, so be sure to make it one you enjoy. You are sure to have choices ranging from swimming to yoga to dance to all sorts of ball-playing, so be sure to make a choice you can look forward to. Your campus will surely have a good gym and sports facilities, so make full use of them.
You can also get good, light exercise by doing a little yoga before bed or working out with light weights in your room. Combine this with watching a movie or listening to music, and you have a nice form of relaxation that will help keep you fit.
Your first year of college is sure to be hectic. Just remember to take a deep breath and focus on keeping some order in your life. Establish a regular routine and make smart choices for your health and well-being. You’re sure to have a slim and successful freshman year.
