Humans are creatures of comfort by nature, so it’s no surprise that many of us find ourselves limiting the types of foods that we eat. However, any foodie will tell you that this type of self-imposed dietary choice means depriving yourself of a world of interesting tastes, textures and foods. If you consider yourself a picky eater, now is a great time to get out there and treat your taste buds to something a bit more exciting and unusual.

Cultivating a more sophisticated palate doesn’t have to break the bank. Every time you visit the grocery store or your local farmer’s market, buy one food that you have never tried before. This is an excellent way to learn more about what’s out there. If you taste it and decide it’s not for you, no worries. At the most, you will only be out a few dollars.

Who doesn’t enjoy a bowl of cereal at breakfast? Even though you know it’s the most important meal of the day, you might fail to take advantage of the foods that will provide your body with fuel to power through the day. Fresh and dried fruits are the perfect addition to your cereal or oatmeal. Raspberries, papayas and other fruits and berries add a unique, flavorful twist and are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins.

Out of habit, many people automatically reach for the salt shaker to season their food. Over time, excessive salt intake can lead to swelling, water retention and even life-threatening hypertension. Instead of risking it, try cooking with new or unfamiliar herbs, spices and seasoning mixes. You will find that even a pinch of these ingredients is enough to transform a dish into something entirely new.

When you dine out at a pricey or familiar restaurant, you probably stick with your favorite dish. After all, why risk ordering something new only to discover that it does nothing for you? If that happens, you end up paying money for a meal that you have no wish to eat. For this reason, it’s often best to conduct your taste tests in the comfort of your own home.

Many people avoid eating fruits and vegetables because they do not like the natural texture. Nonetheless, few would deny that berries, fruits, greens and veggies are packed with nourishment. Nutritionists often recommend juicing for people who have an aversion to eating solid produce. Drinking a glass of freshly squeezed juice makes it easier to meet the recommended dietary allowance of these foods and provides vitamins A, C, E and K depending upon the ingredients.

Expanding your culinary horizons doesn’t mean that you have to try every bizarre and obscure food that lands on your plate. It does mean, however, that you should be willing to step outside of your comfort zone–if only very briefly–and commit to trying different foods in an effort to love and respect your body. Even if you adopt only one of the ideas from this article, you will be taking a huge step forward and doing yourself a favor.
