You don’t want to have 20 DVDs that you never watch and a gym membership you never use.

2. Research, research, research. When you come across something that looks interesting, take the same steps every time. First, look it up on the Internet. See if you can find reviews for the program or method. There will always be some naysayers, but get a feeling for whether most people have a positive or negative experience.

After looking up reviews, try to find any articles on the program. Look for mainstream articles in respected magazines and news outlets. Next, look at the site for the program. You are not always going to get objective information that way, which is why you don’t look at the site until you’ve gotten information from other sources. Finally take a chance on the program yourself and give yourself about 2-3 weeks to see if you like it. If you do the proper research on something before you try it, you will save yourself a lot of time, effort and money.

3. See if you can get a representative of the company or an expert to talk to you about a particular method. If you’re thinking about joining a gym, for example, find out if a member of the staff will talk to you and answer any questions.

4. Think about what you really need. If you are already eating well for example, you may not need to see a nutritionist every week. If you are already physically fit, you may not need a gym. Think about your specific needs, not about what most people do when they want to be fit.

5. Talk to others and find out if they have suggestions for you. Ask friends and family what they do to keep fit. They may be doing something that you aren’t familiar with, and can suggest something new to you. You may learn about a new way to get fit that you really enjoy, so make sure you ask around when you have the chance.
