Running For Fitness, Health, And Enjoyment

Running is a wonderful way for you to get your body into great shape. However, it can be hard to start running for a lot of people. If you aren’t sure how to get fit by running, here are some things to keep in mind when you want to start.

1. Run as soon as you wake up. This is a great idea for a number of reasons. If you run in the morning, you have no chance to be affected by the day. You won’t say “oh, had a bad day at the office so I’ll skip running.” The day is still fresh and new, and starting it off with a run will perk you up and get you ready to go. If you leave it until later, you are more likely to get distracted or simply not feel like doing it.

2. Save something for just your running time. Maybe you downloaded a new album and want to listen to it. Forbid yourself from listening until it’s time to run. That way, you have something to look forward to. You can also try listening to an audiobook or a podcast. You might also consider treating yourself to a smoothie afterwards–a special running reward will motivate you to keep up your running practice.

3. Schedule your running into your calendar. Do this so you will stick with it. Often, if you have a lot of things going on, the first things you stop doing are the things you do for just yourself. You deserve the time to get fit, and by blocking out running time, you are committing to that time. Don’t allow distraction from your goals.

4.Reward yourself for running. Motivate yourself to stick with your running program by giving yourself something you like when you are done. Maybe you want to have a smoothie afterwards, or perhaps you want to want to watch your favorite TV show. If you find a way to link enjoyment to running, you will be more likely to do it.

5. Switch up locations. Sometimes running can be boring after a while, if the only thing you are looking at is the wall in front of the treadmill. Switch up locations and things will be more interesting. Run around your neighborhood, or if you have a beach or a park nearby, take your running over there. You might even consider scheduling different places for yourself so you know what you have to look forward to.

6. Integrate other physical activities into your exercise regiment. You may love running, but you have to keep in mind that your body needs a break sometimes. Try something low-impact on days when you aren’t running, such as yoga or swimming. Giving your body a variety of physical experiences is a great idea.
