Spring Clean Your Fitness Gear

You may use your fitness gear year round, but the odds that you take the time to properly clean your gear are not very good. As you are working to spring clean your home, include your fitness gear in your schedule. Use the following tips to clean and maintain your fitness gear.

Before you begin cleaning your gear, inspect it for any damage or signs of wear and tear. Your fitness clothing needs to be in top condition to do what you need it to do. Even if it is your favorite and most comfortable sports bra, get rid of it if it is not providing you the support it needs to. Socks that have worn thin, shirts that have become smelly and shoes that have seen better days should be discarded. You may want to hold onto your old shoes for working in the yard, but do not use them for your workouts because they are no longer going to support your feet and protect your knees.

Your equipment must be thoroughly cleaned. You may only have a few weights or an extravagant home gym, but all it must be disinfected and the dust and dirt removed. You can use a gentle disinfectant solution to clean them or make your own. You can simply mix a few drops of tea tree and peppermint oils with some water and you have a disinfectant that is nontoxic and smells great.

As you are working to clean and inspect your gear, organize it as you put it away. The easier it is to gain access to your gear, the more likely you will be to use it more often. If you just have your weights piled in a corner, invest in a small shelf to organize them according to weight. Knowing the gear that you have will help you know what you have to use when you are working to plan a new workout regimen.

Now that you have gotten rid of the damaged, smelly or worn out gear, it is time to get yourself some new stuff. This can be a very happy time for some people and a depressing time for others. Having to spend money on gear can be irritating, but you know it will be worth the investment if it allows you to get more fit or maintain a healthy level of fitness. Take advantage of this time to get some new fitness apparel that makes you feel good when you are wearing it. The better you feel when you are wearing it, the more likely you will be to put it on and get busy working out.

Your fitness gear needs to be cleaned and maintained regularly, but if you do not have the time to do it throughout the year, spring is the perfect time to do it.
